How to Cope with Panic Attacks

Handle the Attack in the Moment

If you are having a panic attack, then you may feel as though you are detached from reality. When this happens, you need to try and place yourself back in the moment. Grounding exercises are a great way to place yourself back in the present and a few ways in which you can do this include stretching and going for a walk.

Take Deep Breathes

When you are in the middle of a panic attack, chances are you will be very short of breath and will be struggling to breathe naturally. At this point, you will need to focus on your breathing and deepen it. This will help you to relax and ride out the panic attack. This can help end the panic attack and also help to decrease how often you have them. Try and practice this when you are not having a panic attack, so that when it does happen, you are ready!

Look at the Physical Symptoms

Panic attacks normally happen unexpectedly and when they do you will be okay one moment and feel inconsolable the next. What can make panic attacks even worse is that sometimes you will have the same symptoms as that of a stroke or a heart attack. When this happens, it will obviously heighten the situation and make your panic attack even worse. What you need to remember is that even if you have blurred vision, a pounding heart, headaches, chest pain and shortness of breath, you are not having a real heart attack and you need to try and calm yourself down from this state.

Stay Away from Stress Triggers

For most people, panic attacks tend to occur in similar situations such as stressful life events. This can include things such as going to university, losing a loved one, having a baby or getting married. It could even be psychological trauma such as being robbed or being in a car crash! This stress leads to more anxiety and ultimately more panic attacks. If you are experiencing this type of situation, make sure that you are spending some extra time taking care of yourself.
