German Baby Formula: Is It Worth a Try?

Parents are responsible for the nutrients a baby gets daily. According to clinical trials, breast milk is the best food for newborns because it contains macronutrients, micronutrients, and even antibodies to some infections. If parents cannot breastfeed, they must choose good-quality baby formula. It must be safe, nutritious, and adapted to a baby’s needs.

Today, many caregivers order organic baby formula because it is natural and safe for infants. It replicates breast milk ingredients, so babies digest it quickly and get the required nutrients safely. German brands stand out among other European baby food manufacturers due to many years of spotless reputation in the baby food market. Why do parents prefer HiPP or Holle cow milk baby formula to other breast milk alternatives? Let’s find it out.

Famous German Baby Formula Brands

Germany is a country of high food standards, and it is hard to get the label “organic.” If you see this label on a food pack, you may be sure the product is made of top-quality ingredients. The organic baby formula consists of natural ingredients raised without antibiotics, pesticides, and chemicals. Farmers don’t have the right to spay grass, vegetables, and fruit with herbicides to promise food safety.

Top famous German brands are:

  • Holle
  • Lebenswert Bio
  • HiPP
  • Löwenzahn

These brands got the required certifications that prove their safety for newborns and babies aged 1 to 2.

What Do German Baby Formulas Contain?

When parents select baby formulas for their babies, they must pay attention to the list of ingredients and a brand’s reputation. HiPP, Holle, Lebenswert Bio, and Löwenzahn have proved the quality of their foods. What can we say about the ingredients their products consist of? Why are these formulas hunted in different countries, especially the USA and Canada?

EFSA and Other Food Quality Regulations are Strict

American baby food regulators are less strict than European ones. It means American baby formulas can include ingredients that European brands refuse to add to their infant foods. The most harmful things are:

  • sugar, lactose,  corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners
  • pesticides used by farmers who grow grass and vegetables
  • genetically modified organisms
  • antibiotics used for animal treatment
  • hormones and specific biological additives for quick animal growth and proper milking
  • harmful oils
  • non-organic starch

The EFSA has stricter demands for baby products. Consequently, it is impossible to get the “organic” label when producing a low-quality formula that contains harmful ingredients and causes severe adverse effects.

Most German Brands are Organic

According to 2020 research, children suffer from indigestion, diabetes, excessive weight, or underweight because of improper nutrition. If a child consumes too much sugar and starch from the first days of their life, their bodies can acquire many health disorders.

First, the non-organic baby formula contains a lot of sugar that can provoke insulin resistance and cause diabetes and digestive problems.

Second, the American formula usually contains much starch for the required consistency and to let a baby feel full for an extended period. As a result, a baby’s metabolism slows down, and it starts gaining extra weight.

Third, antibiotics and pesticides hurt a baby’s immune system. Consequently, it becomes vulnerable to various bacterial and viral infections.

Organic baby formula has nothing to do with artificial ingredients. Over 95% of all components are natural. Farmers create eco-friendly environments for cows and goats whose milk is used for baby formula making. Except for baby formula, German brands produce organic pouches and snacks. It means they are also made of natural components without sugar, salt, and artificial preservatives.

Note! If farmers treat animals for parasites or infections, they do not milk them during the required period. Only 100% healthy cows and goats are milked to produce organic baby formula. Independent laboratories test milk, vegetables, plants, and fruit before companies get permission to produce organic baby foods.

German Baby Formula Meets the Needs of Babies of Different Age Groups

It is not a secret that the nutritional requirements of newborns and toddlers differ. Infants eat more often because their stomachs are smaller and the metabolic processes are fast. Nevertheless, newborns need less iron, calcium, protein, fats, carbs, and other nutrients than older children.

Luckily, German brands make several stages to meet the nutritional needs of every baby. Traditionally, you can find the following stages:

  • Pre or Stage 0+ for prematurely born infants
  • Stage 1 for kids from their first days to six months
  • Stage 2 for kids from 6 to 12 months
  • Stage 3 for kids from 12 to 24 months (it can also be Stage 1+)
  • Stage 2+ for babies who poorly tolerate adult meals after 2 years

Moreover, German formula can be made of cow or goat milk. Goat milk is more gentle and less allergic than cow milk. It is usually the main element of hypoallergenic, comfort, and combiotic formulas. Eventually, parents can select the best-matching formula for their babies.

As you can judge, German baby formula is worth a try.
